Psalm 1 gives us one of Scripture’s clearest pictures of a stable life: a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season, its leaf not withering.
What is striking about the image is that the tree is not frantic. It does not chase rain clouds. It does not relocate every week looking for a better environment. It is planted.
Rooted before fruitful
Our culture often begins with fruit. We ask what someone achieved, built, earned, published, or influenced. Psalm 1 begins somewhere deeper. Before fruit comes roots. Before visible usefulness comes hidden nourishment.
The blessed person delights in the instruction of the Lord and meditates on it day and night. The Word becomes more than information. It becomes the place from which life is drawn.
Roots grow quietly, but they determine what survives the storm.
Fruit has a season
The tree bears fruit “in its season.” That phrase offers relief to anyone tempted to believe that every season must look productive. There are seasons of visible growth and seasons when God is deepening roots beneath the surface.
Faithfulness does not require us to manufacture fruit on demand. It calls us to remain near the source of life.
A steady life
To be rooted in Scripture is to have a reference point outside ourselves. Feelings change. Headlines change. Approval changes. God’s Word remains.
That is the life we want Steadfast to encourage: rooted before fruitful, nourished before noticed, faithful before impressive.
